上海长乐路989号，世纪商贸广场，这座新落成的甲级商务楼汇聚了WPP旗下奥美集团、HomeDepot、联邦快递等诸多世界知名企业。然而，就在近期，一支神秘的团队悄然进入，出手阔绰地一举租下了第20层整层办公楼。这就是Google!与在互联网界和华尔街的高调与不羁不同，全球互联网搜索巨头Google却以一种隐蔽得近乎神秘的姿态正式进入了中国。

来自《21世纪经济报道》记者师琰的文章:《Google落地上海 传搜狐前COO古永锵将主政》,使得一直无缘CN域名的Google Inc.由难堪开始静悄悄地出现转机。

google.com.cn和google.cn分别是在1999年12月和2003年3月由创联万网国际信息技术（北京）有限公司所抢先注册，
到期日期分别是2009年的12月和3月，Google为夺回域名，曾于2003年向中国国际经济贸易仲裁委员会提出争议请求，遭到驳回。

为进入中国搜索市场而铺垫准备的此次域名问题，Google可谓是志在必得，以百万重金赎回几年前未及时注册的CN域名—google.com.cn和google.cn，创下了CN域名史上交易最高价。

缘自博客中国sz1961sy对此次交易的推测：

域名 google.com.cn 注册日期 1999-12-03, 以1999-2002年每年交费300元共4年1200元,2003-2004年每年交160元共2年320元,2005年交1年100元,此域名共交了域名服务费:1620元人民币（约200美元）,如果售价10万美元,则相当于6年有2000倍回报率。
域名 google.cn 注册日期 2003-03-17 ,以2003-2004年每年交160元共2年320元,2005年交1年100元,此域名共交了域名服务费:420元人民币（约35美元）,如果售价10万美元,则相当于3年有2800倍回报率。

5月12日BBC中文新闻：据路透社上海消息，美国网络搜索引擎公司Google表示，已获得在中国经营业务的许可证，并购得一个网络域名。

The site is currently down. We recently had some unwanted attention from hackers. We decided we should update some of our software immediately. However during the attempted upgrade we encountered some problems at around 11:00 GMT, April 11th, and some of our websites have not been functional since. All data and blogs are safe and normal working will be restored as soon as we can overcome compatibility problems in our upgraded software.
